“Day By Day!”

“You need to develop good daily habits to accomplish reaching your goals.”  I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times.  This certainly goes for goals that pertain to getting fit and rejuvenating your body, as the years pass. However did the people who suggested say you could make it be FUN! Yes – FUN!

Many of the people I mentioned the words “develop good habits” to said things like: “Yuck! I’m sick of habits. Yeah, we know the people who practice “The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People” have gotten a lot accomplished; but I’m just not a ‘habitual” person. I’m more interesting than that!”  I’m a “free spirit”.

I don’t know exactly when or where the words “habit” and “routine” became linked, in human minds, with tedious or uncreative or boring. I don’t know where repetitious became seen as boring. It’s truthfully the only way we achieve our long-term goals. Habitual behavior (given that little by little I learned to choose my habits wisely) was what helped me graduate number one in my class from the ILR School at Cornell. I’m throwing that at you not so much to promote my accomplishment as to show you how habits can work.

I fell for a wonderful guy at Cornell who had GREAT study habits. I didn’t when I met him. I was passing, but I wasn’t top notch.  However, I did love my classes. So I could have been doing better. My beaux and I went on “study dates” every night and I had fun!!!! We danced on the weekend at the fraternity house and we studied every other night of the week and, sometimes, on weekend afternoons – when there was no game. He was brilliant and I thank him to this day for the incredible thing he taught me about developing the “study habit”.  Later in life I remembered it and it helped me write songs and then produce a musical and the Drama Desk Awards,,  etc. etc. etc. I need to keep my mind tuned to it.

I’d oddly forgotten that habitual behavior is what could get me back into shape when got out of shape in my late 50s and early 60s.  While I was producing theater I’d put on about 45 pounds and developed severe Osteoarthritis! I had to come up with something!  I was so excited with what I discovered – or, I should say “rediscovered” – that I had to share it with others and I ended up helping a lot of people and that’s why I wrote a book about it.

If you’ve already read my book or other posts and/or articles I’ve written you’ll know that I came up with a way to teach people how to design a set of daily “to do’s” that would be healthy for them and be fun for them to do.

I found out the way to make it fun by accident!  It had to do with the WORDS I chose. I’ve already posted how I came up with the term “mini-Qs”! WHA?, you may be asking? I’ve written about them many times.

For YOU reaching the weight and fitness that’s ideal for YOU – mini-Qs work! Here’s what I wrote in July 1912:

Once again – this turns out to be what my book: “Find Your mini-Qs(?): Reveal the Slim, Strong, Sexy Star You Truly Are! at Age 50, 60, 70, and Beyond” is really about. It’s how life works. Finding your minimum daily, weekly, etc. activities to get the results you want means designing the structure that works for you.

“mini-Qs” are the minimum quantity of things you want to do each day that over a reasonable amount of time will get you the goals you want to achieve. You can chose your “to dos” so they fit into your lifestyle and you’ll find that in a period of time (usually a short period) they become FUN for you and you can start giggling about them. GIGGLING is a great help!  Notice I said ‘to do’s” not “not to do’s”. Keeping positive is a key to making just about anything work. That doesn’t mean you need to believe everything you hear and not do research on what’s needed for you to choose to reach your goal.  Know that your wise choices will get you to your goal and if those choices aren’t working for quite a while you can always sit down and think and revise them.

Also, note that I use the term “To Do’s”. I don’t include “Don’t Do’s”                                   We keep thought positive. The only “DON’T DO” is: Don’t beat yourself up if you make a mistake or miss a “daily do’!
